The East Asia Forum
The
single largest project recently funded by the Centre is the East Asia
Forum. This initiative is directed by Professors Peter Drysdale and
Andrew MacIntyre of the Crawford School of Economics and Government
at ANU, and Professor John Fitzgerald of La Trobe University. The project
has attracted $5.7 million funding over six years including the $700,000
approved by ICEAPS between 2006 and 2008.
The Forum follows the establishment of the East Asian Summit (EAS) held
in Kuala Lumpur in December 2005 which focused attention on prospects
for economic and other integration in East Asia. The ICEAPS Board endorsed
this major project to support Australian engagement in the new regional
grouping. The Forum commenced in 2006 with these major conferences:
- East Asian Crisis – Ten Years After (ANU, 21-22 July, UC-Berkeley,
November)
- East Asia, APEC and East Asian Strategies (ANU, 6-7 August)
- East Asia Energy: Prospects and Strategies (ANU, 29-30 August)
- East Asian Modernities (ANU, [Date to be confirmed]).
Australia’s Treasurer, the Hon Peter Costello, launched the East
Asia Forum and the East Asian Bureau of Economic Research, with which
the Forum is associated, in the MacDonald Room of the Menzies Library
at ANU on 17 October and made a major speech on Australia’s East
Asian economic interests.
